Top 5 Questions from Sellers:
1) Why are you selling this house? We wanted to live on Lake Minnetonka and did not have the resources to do so in 2002. Then, we moved from Plymouth, MN and wanted a unique house near the lake where we would have the time to scope out the area. We originally planned to stay in the house for the long term, but had a 3rd child that made us reconsider where we wanted to remodel or move on to the lake. We also had a sailboat that made getting lake access attractive - although the jump in taxes for lakeshore property has been greater then our slip fees at local marina Sailors World.
2) What did you like most about the house? It was just very relaxing. You felt as though you were up in the North Woods, but only a 10 to 25 minute commute from work. The old trees combined with the lake vistas and high ceilings on the second floors were extraordinary features that we know we will miss.
3) What would you have changed about this house? Long term, we would have reconfigured the upstairs nursery into a 5th bedroom with more privacy for our 3rd child. We would have made the upper level three season porch on the back of the apartment a 4 season porch. Depending upon the health status of our east coast parents, we may have changed the apartment to be two separate bedrooms for our daughters or three bedrooms for all the kids with the nursery (which has some of the best all year views of the lake and a massive 25' high deck) as a adult home office. We would have reconfigured the kitchen island for more baking and possible coffered the ceiling in the living room and dining room.
4) How did you live in this house with 3 kids and two professional adults? Actually, quite well. If we could have moved this house to the lake, that would have been the best. The two girls shared the apartment bedroom. The attached three season porch was their play/work area. The apartment living room was a home office for Mr. with great lake views and high ceilings. The nursery functioned as bedroom for the boy. The upstairs den was a home theater for movie night. The apartment kitchen became a craft center for the kids that was quite handy. The entire basement became a playroom for the kids. The basement is all that is left of the original 1954 house. It has some closet and utility space, but is basically a big knotty pine paneled room with two casement windows. It could be transformed into a walkout fairly easily and pool access has been specced with the city of Orono, but we were content with the configuration. Of the two main floor bedrooms, one was an office for Mrs. and the other was guest room with a queen bed. This worked because the main floor bathroom had a 3/4 bath across from the guest bedroom. There is a large high ceiling screen porch off the main floor kitchen that was perfect to relax early in the morning before kids got up and after they went to bed. We have entertained on the main floor for up to 45 people in winter, more in the summer. The upper floor master suite always felt like an indulgent space. It was big and airy with windows on 3 sides and good views of the lake. Family and friend visitations where great times. There was always enough space and lots to do all year round.

5) If you had to to do it all over again, would you buy this house or (isn't the floor plan challenging)? We had looked at a lot of houses before this one. We had to think about how we would live in this house because it is not a traditional colonial. Once we mapped out how our very traditional Plymouth household could transform to this house (2 days), we were sold (1 day) and have not had one regret. In the end, we found that the house was quite empowering because it had space, comfort, beauty, intelligent design and warmth. When we designed the house we now live in, much of what we wanted in our new house was based on what we leaving behind in this property.
